Brixham: A historic fishing town located in southern Devon, England, United Kingdom, Brixham was probably settled as long ago as the Bronze Age. Certainly the site of a Saxon community before the Norman invasion of Britain, Brixham was listed in the Domesday Book (1086) as Briseham, its name taken from the old English for "Brioc's Village". Brixham today has a population of around 17,457 (2001 census), and is still imortant for fishing much as it has been for centuries, though tourism has taken over as the major source of income for the town.

Brixham Attractions: Brixham looks out across Tor Bay to Torquay and is well protected from south-westerly gales. The town developed on a hill around the harbour, in the days when fishing was vital for community survival, in the harbour today you can see a replica of the Golden Hind, the ship famously captained by Sir Francis Drake. Also on the quayside is a statue of William of Orange, commemorating his landing there on November 5th, 1684. Other Brixham attractions include the Brixham Museum, located in the town centre (Tel: 01803 856267), where you can catch up on the history of the town and surrounding areas, Elberry Cove, a pretty shingle cove, with beach and woodland walks, and the 14th century church of St Mary the Virgin, in Green Lane, Churston Ferrers, with its stained glass window donated by novelist Agatha Christie. One of Brixham's most popular annual events is the Cowtown Carnival, held in June.
